RSV Vaccination for Veterans

Protecting Veterans against RSV - supporting general practice

DVA RSV Vaccination Pilot Program

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) poses a significant health risk to older adults, particularly those with pre-existing conditions such as respiratory or cardiac disease. RSV is a highly contagious virus that affects the respiratory tract and can cause severe infections, especially in infants and older adults. In vulnerable populations, RSV can lead to pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and other serious complications, making prevention through vaccination essential.

To enhance protection for those most vulnerable, a new pilot initiative is being implemented in general practices to facilitate access to the fully funded RSV vaccine for eligible Departments of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Gold Card holders. This program is designed to streamline the identification and vaccination process for veterans aged 60 and over, ensuring they receive timely access to protection against RSV. By leveraging general practice software and standardised procedures, the initiative aims to improve efficiency, enhance patient outcomes, and reduce the burden of severe respiratory illness among veterans.

How does it work?

Older adults face a higher risk of complications from RSV, which can lead to hospitalisation, prolonged illness, and severe respiratory distress. Recognising this, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation(ATAGI) recommends RSV vaccination as a key preventive measure. With funding provided by the DVA, eligible veterans can access this critical protection without financial barriers.

Identification
Using general practice software, clinics efficiently identify eligible veterans based on age and DVA status, ensuring no one who qualifies is over looked.
Consent and Prescription
General Practitioners engage veterans in informed discussions about the vaccine, obtain consent, and issue prescriptions.
Collection & Administration
Veterans can collect their fully funded RSV vaccine from their preferred pharmacy and choose to receive the vaccination at either the pharmacy or their GP clinic. The administration is then documented in their medical records for continuity of care.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to proactive healthcare for veterans, ensuring that those most at risk receive timely interventions. By implementing a standardised approach, the program not only improves vaccination uptake but also integrates smoothly into existing general practice workflows.

Support for this program was provided by an independent grant from GSK, on the condition that no preference was given to any particular RSV vaccination by GPs or veterans. This initiative aligns with best practices in veteran healthcare and contributes to national immunisation goals by increasing RSV vaccination coverage in high-risk populations. By prioritising preventive care, this initiative empowers general practice teams to safeguard the health of veterans and reduce the impact of RSV-related complications. With the right processes in place, we can ensure that those who have served our country receive the protection they need.
